Roof rats:

Roof rats are exceptional climbers, which is how they earned their name. They often nest in trees, attics, rafters, and upper floors—anywhere high off the ground. These rats have slender bodies, large ears, and long, scaly tails that are longer than their body—perfect for balance as they navigate rooftops and wires. Unlike the heavier, burrowing Norway rat, roof rats are lighter and more aerial. If you see a rat up high, it’s probably a roof rat. Roof rats eat a wide variety of foods—fruits, grains, nuts, insects—but are surprisingly selective eaters, often sampling before committing to a meal. One female can have up to 5 litters a year, with 5–8 pups per litter. In the right conditions, populations can explode quickly. These rats can chew through wood, plastic, and even electrical wiring, causing significant damage to homes and sometimes even starting fires.
